Kuykendall Custom Pools & Construction
Beware of “fly by night” companies.Because our industry is not regulated in Texas, there are many swimming pool companies that take advantage of people.Starting construction, taking your money and half way through the project disappear. You end up with half of a pool while paying for a whole pool.Next thing you know, they have closed that company only to open up again with a different name and doing this to others again.
Make sure everything you discuss with your builder is in writing.Including, but not limited to, the companies insurance, warranty, equipment and materials used, contractors’ information and construction details.Confirm that the contract is a turnkey price.Beware of companies that hit you with tons of “change orders” during construction.
All drains should be compliant with the ANSI/APSP-7 2006 Standard for Suction Entrapment Avoidance. There are many safety standards that you should be very concerned with. Visit www.apsp.org to read the International Swimming Pool & Spa Code (ISPSC) and make sure your builder adheres to them even though they are not required to in Texas.
This can be one of the trickiest and most stressful parts of getting a swimming pool and/or transforming your backyard into your personal paradise. So why take chances? The pool builder you choose will be at your house, taking your money. Make sure you get what you pay for.
Regretfully, the industry we love so much is not regulated by the great state of Texas (which it should be). It’s very easy for any salesman/woman to come in and mislead you. Do your research, talk to neighbors and look at a company’s work in person. Anyone can use any picture and pass it off as theirs.
It is also very easy for a salesman/woman to look at another companies design and tell you they can build the exact same pool and beat their price. However there are so many ways to lower their cost while still telling you that you are getting the exact same thing when in fact, you are not. Once it’s built, it’s too late. Do not let this be you. It is not easy at all comparing construction proposals, especially proposals that are vague and do not provide details such as steel schedule, plumbing details, which gunite company is used, the actual brand of interior (don’t let someone pass off an interior as PebbleTec) and so on. Selecting a company that has good designers, has no problem putting great details in their proposal/contract, carries general liability insurance, will take you to see their actual work and stands behind their work/products may cost a little more but not having problems is well worth it!
Here at Kuykendall Custom Pools, our job is to educate you and let you make the choice that is right for you. With our professional experience, will steer you in the direction that we have found works best. But you always have the final say on what goes into your project.
